Go Big Grad: A Graduation Celebration

Herbie Husker standing in front of Love Library

Out of an abundance of caution and as we did in May, we will not be conducting an in-person commencement ceremony in August. We will again confer degrees in a virtual celebration and all graduates will receive gift boxes with a complimentary cap and tassel along with Husker-themed souvenirs. All August 2020 graduates will be invited to attend a future in-person commencement.

On August 15, the University will host the “Go Big Grad: A Husker Graduation Celebration” at 9:00 a.m. CDT that will be streamed here on this website. Graduates and their families are encouraged to view the online celebration. Although we will not be in-person, we hope you can join in the celebration and hear from guest speaker Dr. Marilyn Moore, retired associate superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools and past president of Bryan College of Health Sciences, as well as other special guests.. At the end of the celebration, Chancellor Green will confer degrees with a turning of the tassel moment for graduates.

Through UNL Bridges International, where I served for close to three years, I made so many international friends, and this is beyond my imagination. There are so many nations represented on UNL campus, and I was able to make friends and share life with so many different people and learn from them. I truly grow to appreciate different perspectives of the world and life, and I become so much more culturally aware and welcoming to people who are different from me.

The best thing about being a Husker is the tremendous camaraderie and support from UNL and fellow students.

Graduating from Nebraska means being a role model for kids in my hometown community because going to a big school like Nebraska is a dream for most. I just wanted to show everybody that it was/is possible to achieve.

Thank you mom. I am forever grateful for your continuous love and your support in leading me to follow my dreams. You have been the best role model, and I would not be the individual I am today without you

I would like to thank my advisor Andrea for guiding me throughout my time at the college and bringing opportunities to my attention. I would also like to thank Katie Krcmarik for all the constructive feedback she gave me in class and in Jacht, and for just pushing me to do better.

The largest impact on me as a student has been from my field classes, whether at Cedar Point Biological Station in Ogallala, NE, or studying abroad in Ecuador. Learning hands on conservation techniques is incredibly formative and exhilarating.

To the UNL Class of 2020! To know you is to know the true meaning of “bittersweet…” Bitter to have you leave us this way, without a proper send off. So sweet to see who you are and what you have become. Congratulations to each and every one of you!

Gina Matkin, Professor of Leadership, ALEC, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources

I cannot thank the Nebraska Football Department enough for giving me the experience of a lifetime working as a Recruiting Intern. I will cherish the memories I made and the amazing things I learned forever!

It is your humility, grace, curiosity and resilience that will carry us forward. Your openness to change, your willingness to seek the rich dimensions in other people and your refusal to ever stop growing will ensure that you are an active participant in the future instead of simply a spectator.

Susan Fritz, Executive Vice President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College

Here’s the big secret, which isn’t so secret. You will get farther in life and get there quicker because you’re from Nebraska. I kid you not. We Nebraskans come armed with tools for success, and other Nebraskans know it. (A Nebraskan is) someone who’s honest, a straight shooter, on time, has a good work ethic, a sense of humor, knows what a Runza is and is generally pleasant to be around.
